( Lebanon , 1970s , I Notturni Self-Released )

posted on 29 / 03 / 2024

For today, I wanted to share with you “I Notturni“, an incredible powerful psychedelic Rock Funk Soul instrumental with gorgeous flute & organ parts, taken from the one-and-only EP released by the Lebanese band “I Notturni” in the 70s (I think, any informations are welcomed…), leaded by the composer & musician Khaled Choughari, and that used to play in several night clubs of Lebanon (it was the resident band of “Casino Du Liban” for some times), Iran & Egypt.

The band was composed with :

Khaled Choughari : Music, Band leading ;

Ermanno Riccordi : Lyrics ;

Conductor : Tony Akkawi ;

Super obscure & hard to find record, one of the hardest to find Lebanese treasures, hope you’ll like it !

( Nigeria , 1979 , Grandstar Records )

posted on 06 / 03 / 2024

For today, I wanted to share with you “Ole“, a 70s psychedelic Afro Rock Funk with Afrobeat flavors, taken from “Dancing In The Nude” the first album of the mythical Nigerian band “The Funkees“, initially recorded in 1974 in London, and repressed in 1979 (the version presented here).

Originating as an army band after the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War), it contributed to the outpouring of upbeat music produced by young people in Nigeria in response to the darkness of the recently concluded civil conflict.

The band was composed with :

– Lead Vocals, Percussion : Mohammed Ahidjo ;

– Guitar [Lead], Organ, Piano, Vocals, Percussion [Miscellaneous] : Jake Sollo ;

– Guitar [2nd], Vocals, Percussion [Miscellaneous] : Harry Mosco ;

– Bongos, Percussion : Roli Paterson ;

– Congas, Vocals : Sonny Akpabio ;

– Drums, Vocals : Chyke Madu ;

– Electric Bass [Fender], Vocals, Percussion : Danny Heibs ;

Killer album from start to finish, hope you’ll enjoy it !

Salim “Sal Davis” Abdallah Salim – Unchain My Heart

( Kenya , 1963 , Teeny Records )

Following this former article, I wanted to share with you for today “Unchain My Heart“, an outstanding cover of the interplanetary hit originally recorded by the American singer Otis Williams in 1960, reinterpreted here in a frantic Twist Jerk Soul Rock way by the Kenya composer & singer Salim “Sal Davis” Abdallah Salim and recorded in Belgium in 1963.

This version – my favorite by far – is quite similar to the one sung by the legendary singer & pianist Ray Charles, but is slightly different, faster, warmer and soulful – Enjoy !

( Benin , 1970s , LA aux Ecoutes )

posted on 15 / 10 / 2023

Following to this former post, I wanted to share with you for today “Dis-Moi Oui“, a devastating psychedelic Afro Soul Jerk Mod Funk, recorded in the early 70s by the legendary beninese composer, musician, boxer & cabaret owner Theophile “El Rego” Do Rego and his “Commandos” backing band.

Starting music very young, he played in dozen of bands, included “Les Panchos de Cotonou” along with Gnonnan “Gnonnas Pedro” Sossou Pierre Kouassivi, another mythical beninese musician.

This post is dedicated to El Rego’s memory, who passed away the last Wednesday 11 of October at the age of 86.

May is Soul rest in peace, sure he’s still jamming in heaven – Enjoy !

Orchestre Rail Band De Bamako – Mouodilo

( Mali , 1970's , EMI - His Master's Voice )

posted on 30 / 07 / 2023

Following this previous article, I wanted to share with you “Mouodilo“, a devastating furious Afro Soul Jerk Funk track from West Africa, recorded in Bamako (Mali) in the early 70s by the mythical Malian band “Orchestre Rail Band” originally founded and led at this time by the legendary saxophonist Tidiani Kone, an outstanding musician that was also a griot (a kind of religious leader/ influent personality).

Largely responsible for the birth of modern Mandingo music from Mali, the group was also called “Orchestre du Buffet Hotel de la Gare de Bamako” because it played there twice a week.

Pressed in Nigeria on the local branch famous label “EMI – His Master’s Voice“, the track presented here (my favorite !) is an early rough version of the 1973 “Moko Diolo“, also included in their second blue album – Enjoy !

Rainbow Bridge – War Of Changes

( Lebanon , 1972 , Rainbow Bridge Self-Released )

posted on 31 / 05 / 2023

Following this previous post, I wanted to share with you for today “War Of Changes“, an incredible heavy & hard Psychedelic Rock Soul Funk track with bewitching flute solos & heavy vocal parts, taken from the ultra hard to find only single recorded in 1972 (very beginning of the Lebanese civil war) by the first band of the Lebanese musicians 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐦 𝐇𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐥𝐢 (عصام الحاج علي) (Guitar) & Toufic Farroukh (توفيق فروخ) (Saxophone) who will form later the legendary band “Ferkat Al Ard” (فرقة الأرض).

This single also features the musicians Ali Neemeh (Vocals, Keyboards), Khaled Habre (خالد الهبر) (Bass), Mounir ??? (Drums) & Aram ??? (Flute)(any additional information is welcome).

This record is a serious holy grail, one of the hardest to find of the Lebanese musical history, rarest than the mythical album “Oghneya” (أغنية) by Ferkat Al Ard (فرقة الأرض) – Hope you’ll like it, enjoy !
