Alain Peters – Complainte Pour Mon Defunt Papa

( La Reunion , 1985 , Village Titan )

posted on 02 / 08 / 2020

Died in 1995 at the age of 43, Alain Peters, poet, musician, singer and melodist of genius native of Reunion was for a long time one of the best kept secrets of the Indian Ocean.

First in a band (“Les Caméléons”) and then alone, he crossed the 70s and 80s like a shooting star, drowning his spleen and demons in alcohol, leaving behind a handful of recordings including this tape, “Mangé Pou Le Cœur”.

Produced in very few copies at the time by the association “Village Titan”, and accompanied with a selection of a few of his poems, this one sums up in itself the beauty of the inestimable heritage – and unfortunately still too confidential – left by Peters, through ten Blues, Jazz, Sega and Maloya tracks merging in a great way Creole, African, Indian and European sounds.

For today, I decided to share with you “Complainte Pour Mon Defunt Papa“, my favorite track from this tape, a sublime melancholic instrumental Maloya Jazz track – Enjoy !

Coulouce – Angela

( Mauritius , 1971 , Damoo )

posted on 18 / 11 / 2018

Jean-Pierre Mohabeer was a Mauritian singer, one of the legends of the Sega (an important musical genre from the Indian Ocean).

He renamed himself “Coulouce” in the 60s to make his debuts as an amateur singer in the “Baie du Tombeau” region on the island of Mauritius, where he worked as a waiter in a hotel.

Street singer, he met on the road other musicians, with whom he formed at the begining of the 70s his first Orchestra, “Los Creolos“, to animate bals, dancings and weddings. With this Orchestra, he recorded his first singles (Sega Goblet, Angela, Soul Sega) that quickly became great hits on the island.

The divorce with his wife will be the beginning of his fall. He began to drink, and went for oblivion deep in glasses. A descent into hell in the bars, until his meeting with Anecy who became his second wife and helped him up the slope.

In 1992, he made an astonishing comeback with the K7 “Coulouce vine encore“, followed by another in 1994, “Séga socolat“. At the same time, he recorded the CD “Sega seggae” and the album “Coulouce” in 1994.

The singer, who then fell back into oblivion, died a few years ago, on February 2005.

I decided to make you rediscover “Angela“, a sweet deep Sega song – Enjoy !
