Following this former article, I wanted to share with you for today “Balade Dans La Foret D’Ajoupa“, an incredible bewitching Soul Jazz Folk track with deep percussions from Martinique (French West Indies), taken from the first LP from the legendary flutist & poet Max Cilla recorded in 1981 on the French label “Apia“.

Henri Guedon – Karma (Martinique, 1975, La Voix Du Globe)

Following this former article, I wanted to share with you for today “Karma“, an outstanding blend of Cadence Soul Funk Latin Synth Jazz & Fusion influences, taken from the 3rd album recorded in 1975 by the mythical musician, painter, sculptor and ceramist Henri Guedon from Martinique, considered by most as the grandfather of modern music from French West Indies. 

This album includes :

Henri Guedon : Leader, Lead Vocals, Agogô, Cowbell, Kalimba, Spoons, Helicon, Skratjie, Percussion, Handclaps, Guimbarde, Bombo, Balafon ;

For today, I wanted to share with you “Wòz – Joël É Jack“, a splendid spiritual deep Gwo Ka Island Jazz Folk track from Guadeloupe (French West Indies) with beautiful synth parts, privately recorded & released in 1989 by a bunch of Guadeloupean culture, roots militant & artists leaded by the musician & poet Judith Simone “Wòz” Faisans-Renac.

The band was composed by Marcel Louis-Sidney, Humbert Marboeuf, Joël Nankin, Henri Peratout, Luc Reinette, Lucien Viardot, Judith Simone Faisans-Renac, Jacques Grizelin, Georges Faisans, Max Cointre, Georges Bourguignon, Henri Bernard, Henri Amedien, Etienne Faisans, Christian Amour, Hector Poullet among others.

Gwakasonné – Lovli (Guadeloupe, 1987, GKS)

Gwakasonne was a band from Guadeloupe island, composed by several great Jazz and Gwo Ka players such as José Bellerose and Edmony Krater, and leaded by Roger Oumaou.

They recorded 3 albums together in the 80’s, that are really hard to find nowadays.

The track presented here, “Lovli“, is taken from “Temwen“, their last album recorded in 1987, and is a great example of the unique kind of music they used to play, a perfect blend of Gwo Ka and Spiritual Jazz elements – Enjoy !

Barrel Coppet and Mister Lof – Rhum et Coutelas (Martinique, 1972, Hit Parade)

Anatole “Barrel” Coppet (a saxophone player) and Romuld “Mister” Lof (a singer) were two musicians from Martinique who used to play in the Antilles and in France from the 50’s.

They recorded several album together with great names of the French Caribbean Jazz scene back in the days (as Alain Jean-Marie, who play the piano on this album), and a few singles.

I decided to present you “Rhum et Coutelas”, a sweet jazzy biguine song taken from their first album recorded in 1972 on the great Hit Parade label – enjoy !
