For today, I’d like to share with you “God Is My Refuge (Dieu Est Mon Refuge) (Part 1)“, a bewitching haunting 70 Afro Folk Soul Religious track from Benin sung in French, taken from the sole single composed & sung by the mysterious Beninese musician Abdoul Madjid Djamiou Adjileye, recorded during his studies in Cairo (Egypt) on his own record label “Adjileye Generations” (any more infos are welcome !).

As beautiful as its mysterious, really obscure & hard to find, hope you’ll like it – Enjoy !

Yta Jourias – Pesse Mi Buntare

( Togo , 1975 , Sonafric )

For today, I’d like to share with you “Pesse Mi Buntare“, a 70s bewitching sweet Afro Bossa Nova Slow Jazz song from Togo (West Africa), taken from the 1st album of the Togolese Diva Yta Jourias born in 1946 near Lome (Togolese capital).

This album was recorded in 1975 in Paris on the legendary French record label Sonafric, known for having produced thousands of singles and albums by artists from French-speaking African countries between the 1960s and 1990s.

On this album produced by the mythical African producer Gilles Sala, Yta Jourias is backed by the Mami-Water band, composed with 9 musicians from Congo, Togo & Tunisia.

Highly recommended LP from start to finish, on which the singer shows all her musical diversity, capable of drawing from all musical genres and numerous languages & dialects from many several African (Ahoussa, Bambara, Ewe, Mina, Arabic) & European countries (French, English & … Russian as on the track presented here !).

Funfact : Yta Jourias was also a brillant basketball player, that used to play with the national Togolese young team before leaving for her musical career !

Hope you’ll like this song, enjoy !

Les Beryls – Tom Dooley

( Madagascar , 1962 , Rex )

posted on 05 / 03 / 2024

Following this former post, I wanted to share with you for today “Tom Dooley“, a sweet catchy Soul Pop Chanson track with Jazz influences & nice banjo parts, French cover of a classic American song.

This song is taken from the 1st EP recorded in September 1962 on the legendary label “Discomad” run by the “De Comarmond” family on Madagascar island (that used to own the only pressing plant of all over Madagascar island !) by “Les Beryls“, a quite unknown group (until this time !) composed of 6 sisters & brothers : Coco, Dave, Monikya, Nicole, Pat and Rocky Rabaraona.

After changing their name for “Les Surfings” and releasing only one single under that name on the label “Discomad“, the band became very famous in France a few years later under the name “Les Surfs“, releasing many albums & singles in France including many covers in French of great American standards (including nice ones from Dusty Springfield or The Ronettes !) before splitting in 1971.

Rare as hen’s teeth only EP, real piece of Madagascar musical history with a gorgeous cover art, hope you’ll like – Enjoy !
