The Smockers – Zeny Izy (Madagascar, 1970s, Discomad)

For today, I wanted to share with you “Zeny Izy“, a very interesting & groovy deep track from Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, really nice blend of Psychedelic Soul, Reggae, Pop, Rock, Folk & Fusion influences that only that specific geographical area has the secret.

This song is taken from the first single recorded by the band “The Smockers“, leaded by the composer & musician Roger Georges, and out on the mythical Madagascan record label “Discomad” in the late 70s – Enjoy !

Les Beryls – Tom Dooley (Madagascar, 1962, Rex)

Following this former post, I wanted to share with you for today “Tom Dooley“, a sweet catchy Soul Pop Chanson track with Jazz influences & nice banjo parts, French cover of a classic American song.

This song is taken from the 1st EP recorded in September 1962 on the legendary label “Discomad” run by the “De Comarmond” family on Madagascar island (that used to own the only pressing plant of all over Madagascar island !) by “Les Beryls“, a quite unknown group (until this time !) composed of 6 sisters & brothers : Coco, Dave, Monikya, Nicole, Pat and Rocky Rabaraona.

After changing their name for “Les Surfings” and releasing only one single under that name on the label “Discomad“, the band became very famous in France a few years later under the name “Les Surfs“, releasing many albums & singles in France including many covers in French of great American standards (including nice ones from Dusty Springfield or The Ronettes !) before splitting in 1971.

Rare as hen’s teeth only EP, real piece of Madagascar musical history with a gorgeous cover art, hope you’ll like – Enjoy !

Firmin Viry – Ti Crie A Moin Anin (Reunion, 1970s, Disques Issa)

For today, I wanted to share with you “Ti Crie A Moin Anin“, a incredible deep Folk Jazz Maloya track, one of the major musical genre from Reunion island in the Indian Ocean (with Sega music), that blends together musical roots from France & former slave chants from several African countries such as Zimbabwe (where “Maloya” could be translated by “great sorcerer“), Mozambique (where it could be translated by “incantation“) and Madagascar (where “Maloy Aho” could be translated by “to hurl“).

Prohibited at the end of the 50s by the French administrators of the island, this genre was officially authorized once again in the late 70s, and is listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2009.

The song presented here was recorded in the 70s by Firmin Viry, one of the masters of the genre, and is my favorite from him – Enjoy !

Jean-Claude Vinson – RN7 (Madagascar, 2013, Self-production)

Jean-Claude Vinson is a Madagascan guitarist and singer, born in 1958 and who released 2 albums surrounded by the best musicians of the island, as Sylvin Marc or Jean Emilien Rakotonandrasana.

Strongly influenced by his idol Carlos Santana, he learnt to play the guitar by himself, and his music is a unique mixture of Rock, Traditionnal Madagascan Rhythms, Folk and Jazz music.

He lives between Madagascar and the south of France, and is also strongly involved into environmental care and Madagascan politics.

He also militates for the defense and recognition of the primitive people “Mikea” of Madagascar, a tribe of hunter-gatherers who live in the Mikea Forest, on the South of the Island.

He’s currently working on his next album, that will be out next year.

I decided to make you discover “RN7“, the first track of his second album “Blue Bird“, a perfect example of the musical genre he managed to create, halfway between tradition and modernity – Enjoy !
