Samba” is a very well known West-African traditional folk song from the Wassoulou area (situated between Ivory Coast,Guinea and Mali).

This song talks about Samba, a young and unlucky taxi driver from Conakry (Guinea) who fall in love with one of his customers. He steals the earings of the girl to see her again, but the father of the girl finds out the craftiness of the young Samba and casts out the boy. After many adventures, everything goes finally in order when Samba asks the girl in marriage.

Several covers of this song, in differents musical styles, were recorded from the 70s to the 80s, to traditional from afro rock and funk way.

For today, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite version of this classic song, interpreted here in a raw Afro Funk way by the Malian James Brown Moussa Doumbia – Enjoy !

The Orchestre Super Mazembe was a very popular band in Nairobi (Kenya) in the 80’s, as known on the Lingala Kenyan scene as Les Mangelepa and Baba Gaston.

The band was formed in Zaire in 1967 by Mutonkole Longwa Didos, and was called “Super Vox” at the time, but changed its name to Orchestra Super Mazembe when the members moved to Nairobi in 1974.

The members decided to split in 1985, after more than 5 albums and several singles recorded.
