Cyril Diaz & his Orchestra – Tabu (Trinidad And Tobago, 1958, Cook)

Tabu (or occasionally spelt Taboo) is a Cuban standard that has been covered countless times. The song was written by the mezzo-soprano Margarita Lecuona, the niece of the famous composer, pianist and bandleader Ernesto Lecuona.

For today, I wanted to share with you my favorite version of this classic, covered in 1958 by the saxophonist Cyril Diaz from Trinidad and Tobago and his orchestra, in an irresistible raw Calypso Biguine Jazz way.

Actually, Cyril Diaz recorded two slightly different versions of this track the same year, and I decided to make you discover the “vocal” one that appears one this compilation, out at the time on the “Cook” Trinidadian vinyl record label (maybe I’ll share with you another day the other one) – Enjoy !
