Firmin Viry – Ti Crie A Moin Anin (Reunion, 1970s, Disques Issa)

For today, I wanted to share with you “Ti Crie A Moin Anin“, a incredible deep Folk Jazz Maloya track, one of the major musical genre from Reunion island in the Indian Ocean (with Sega music), that blends together musical roots from France & former slave chants from several African countries such as Zimbabwe (where “Maloya” could be translated by “great sorcerer“), Mozambique (where it could be translated by “incantation“) and Madagascar (where “Maloy Aho” could be translated by “to hurl“).

Prohibited at the end of the 50s by the French administrators of the island, this genre was officially authorized once again in the late 70s, and is listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2009.

The song presented here was recorded in the 70s by Firmin Viry, one of the masters of the genre, and is my favorite from him – Enjoy !

Jean-Claude – Mauvais Zimeurs (Mauritius, 1978, Disques Issa)

For today, I wanted to share with you “Mauvais Zimeurs“, a sweet psychedelic Soul Sega track recorded in 1978 by the legendary Mauritian musician Jean-Claude Gaspard, and taken from the second volume of a very obscure compilation intended to promote folk songs from Mauritius and Seychelles islands (Indian Ocean) – Enjoy !

Alain Peters – Caloubadia

Alain Peters was a poet and a musician, born the 10 of March 1952 in the city of Saint Denis (La Reunion island).

Playing guitar since he was 13 years old, he truly began his musical career in the 70’s, playing rock and pop music in several bands in La Reunion, including Carroussel (you can go here for more informations on this band), but was particularly known through his contribution to the Maloya musical scene (a traditional musical genre from La Reunion, as the Sega style), which he was one of the most prominent figures and strongest supporter.

Accursed poet and misunderstood musician during his life, he died the 12 of July 1995 in the streets of Saint Paul (La Reunion island) of an heart disease, from drinking too much and singing misery.

He released one album and a few 7 inches.

Have a nice sunday,

Armand
