International Soleil Band – Ta Lassa (Mali, 1983, West African Music)

The International Soleil Band was a bunch of Malian and Guinean musicians who recorded a unique album in 1983 on the French based label “WAM“.

“Ta Lassa“, the song presented today, is a track I always play in club and parties, groovy as hell, a blend of traditionnal rhythms, syncoped guitar riffs and nervous organ solo parts that sounds a bit like a tropical Giorgio Moroder recording – Enjoy !

Charles Rodriguez and The African Revolution – L’Amour Ne S’achete Pas (Benin, 1970s, Decca)

Today, let’s make you (re)discover an obscure single from the Beninese artist Charles Rodriguez.

Charles Rodriguez, an organ player, used to play at the time with several well known Beninese musical groups, such as “Ignace de Souza and the Black Santiagos” or “El Rego et ses commandos“.

He recorded only 4 tracks, and “L’amour ne s’achète pas” (“You can’t buy love”) is one of them. In this song, Charles tells prostitutes on a heavy Afrobeat rhythm to stop drinking and selling their body, they are wasting their lives this way.

Strangely, this single has the “DECCA” cover, but was pressed specialy for an Nigerian music shop based in Lagos called “Alofty” in August 73 – Enjoy !

Abeti Masikini – Beya Beya (Congo, 1976, Pathe Marconi)

Abeti Masikini was one of the most famous Congolese singer, born on the 9 of October 1951 in Kisangani (Democratic Republic of Congo, former Zaire).

After being graduated of a secretary diploma, she integrated the Congolese Ministry of Culture and Arts in 1969.

She started to become known in 1970 thanks to a singing contest on the National Congolese TV, toured in 1971 in many African countries (Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, Niger..), in Europe (she performed in France in 1973 at the Olympia Concert Hall in Paris, in Belgium..) and also in the United States 1974 at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York.

She recorded her first album in 1973 and around 20 others and dozens of singles after that.

She died on the 28th of September 1994 in Paris.

The song presented here, “Beya Beya“, is a splendid deep and melancholic Afro psych fusion track taken from the live album that was recorded on the 7 and 8 of April 1975 at the Olympia Concert Hall in Paris – Enjoy !
