Firmin Viry – Ti Crie A Moin Anin (Reunion, 1970s, Disques Issa)

For today, I wanted to share with you “Ti Crie A Moin Anin“, a incredible deep Folk Jazz Maloya track, one of the major musical genre from Reunion island in the Indian Ocean (with Sega music), that blends together musical roots from France & former slave chants from several African countries such as Zimbabwe (where “Maloya” could be translated by “great sorcerer“), Mozambique (where it could be translated by “incantation“) and Madagascar (where “Maloy Aho” could be translated by “to hurl“).

Prohibited at the end of the 50s by the French administrators of the island, this genre was officially authorized once again in the late 70s, and is listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2009.

The song presented here was recorded in the 70s by Firmin Viry, one of the masters of the genre, and is my favorite from him – Enjoy !

Alain Peters – Complainte Pour Mon Defunt Papa (La Réunion, 1985, Village Titan)

Died in 1995 at the age of 43, Alain Peters, poet, musician, singer and melodist of genius native of Reunion was for a long time one of the best kept secrets of the Indian Ocean.

First in a band (“Les Caméléons”) and then alone, he crossed the 70s and 80s like a shooting star, drowning his spleen and demons in alcohol, leaving behind a handful of recordings including this tape, “Mangé Pou Le Cœur”.

Produced in very few copies at the time by the association “Village Titan”, and accompanied with a selection of a few of his poems, this one sums up in itself the beauty of the inestimable heritage – and unfortunately still too confidential – left by Peters, through ten Blues, Jazz, Sega and Maloya tracks merging in a great way Creole, African, Indian and European sounds.

For today, I decided to share with you “Complainte Pour Mon Defunt Papa“, my favorite track from this tape, a sublime melancholic instrumental Maloya Jazz track – Enjoy !

Troupe Gaston Hoareau – Mon Patrie Mon Boucé Manzé (La Reunion, 1976, P.C.R.)

The song presented here, “Mon Patrie Mon Boucé Manzé”, is a beautiful Deep and Raw Maloya track, a musical genre that mixes together traditionnal rhythms, Poetry and political Creole claims that was forbidden by the authorities in the island until 1981.

It that was one the first recordings from Daniel Hoareau (Or Danyèl Waro in Creole langage), one of the most famous musicians from La Reunion, who is still active nowadays, and it was recorded during the 4th congress of the Communist Political Party from Reunion Island in 1976 – Enjoy !
